[Background/Personality]

Tohru is the bubbly and cheerful main character and heroine of Fruits Basket. The start of the story takes place four months after the death of her mother, her only remaining immediate family. Although it is certain that she experienced something as tragic as the accident her mother lost her life in, a car accident in which she was a pedestrian and was hit, Tohru is outwardly the epitome of optimism, possessing a happy-go-lucky and determined attitude which she claims to be unshakable. Smiling ever day, with the help of her two best friends, there isn't anyone, as Yuki Sohma thought, that would ever have been able to guess the types of hardships she's experienced or been through.

Without a mother or father, she was adopted by her paternal grandfather on her father's side. It wasn't shortly after she moved in however that the house needed renovations. Her grandfather asked if she had somewhere to stay temporarily during the time, while he moved in with his daughter's family. Not one to ever want to burden anyone with herself, she immediately responded that she did, but it was a lie. Coming up with the bright idea that if she could somehow live on her own then everyone would be happy, she bought herself a cheap tent, pitched it on up in the woods and made herself at home. Not so surprisingly living in a tent didn't really work out all that great for a regular high school student...

It was only a week later that she was discovered by a classmate and his cousin living illegally on their property, both tired and ill from over-working herself at school and her part-time job. If it doesn't already sound like a typical shojo manga, true to form it gets better! Her classmate was the dashing, super handsome and popular, Yuki Sohma, the 'Prince' of her school. Generally inviting homeless people into your house is kind of dangerous, especially when you have a deep and mysterious family secret that isn't to be spoken about or spread around, but that's exactly what they did. A bit clumsy, it's was only the next day that she discovered that the household that took her in, and it's various members of the family, are cursed. Tripping over her own feet she crashes chest first into Kyou Sohma, revealing the big Sohma family secret!

Whenever hugged by a member of the opposite sex, or overly exhausted, the cursed members of the Sohma family transform into one of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, including the fabled cat that was 'tricked' and left out of the banquet. Although initially enchanted by the cute animal forms her new friends take, it's quite clear that a dark cloud surrounds the Sohma family. What started as a fun game of discovering which animals her new friends might be, changes to a fervent desire to break the curse, and free the person she fell in love with--Kyou Sohma--the cat. This leads to all kinds of trouble. Including an emotional internal battle that Tohru struggles through due to the love of her life... her mother.

The largest threat to Tohru's canon love interest is, in fact, Kyoko Honda. With a mother complex like no tomorrow there is not anyone who is allowed to replace the memories she possesses of her mother. For fear of forgetting her and what they once shared she sticks to what she remembers of her like glue. She paints a beautiful, flawless picture of her mother who, despite the fact that she was a legend as a gang leader, was the most important person to her. While her mother did, in fact, adore Tohru to pieces she was far from perfect. In fact, she psychologically upset Tohru as a child in such a way that it affects her even into adulthood.

Although Tohru hides it well, she's frightened of the people she cares about disappearing or leaving her behind. And understandably so. As a child, she was born into a happy family, with her mother and father, Kyoko and Katsuya Honda. Although the memories of her father are blurry, Tohru remembers that their time spent together as a whole was a gentle, peaceful time, and that he was a kind man toward her. However, when Tohru was only three, Katsuya passed away due to illness, changing her life, and the way she lived thereon after completely.

Torn by the death of her husband, Kyoko became neglectful toward her daughter, and suicidal. This left Tohru in a confused, frightened, and very lonely state. None of their family, with the exception her grandfather (from her father's side), were supportive or even thoughtful toward the family experiencing their loss. Under the impression that a child could not understand the words, feelings, and emotions of an adult, several of Tohru's relatives discussed the loss in front of her. In a thoughtless and harmful moment, they said that Tohru didn't look anything at all like her father, and that she would be no consolation to the family for his death. This started the first of many transformations in Tohru.

Disillusioned into the belief that if she didn't look or act like her father, Tohru felt that she would lose her mother forever. Taking on his speech and mannerisms, Tohru tried to imitate everything about him that she could remember. Even after her mother realized the horrible mistake she had made in neglecting Tohru to the extent that she had, Tohru didn't change these new mannerisms. Although genuinely caring and loving, Tohru fears more than anything being alone. After what happened with Kyoko after Katsuya's death, she began to feel that unless she acted a certain way she'd lose the people she cares about. Even her speech patterns are a tool that was meant to endear her mother and others to her.

Because of the threat she felt her father had posed to her mother, Tohru vilified her father in her mind's eye even knowing that it was wrong and unfair toward him. She rarely, if ever, speaks about her father, something Hiro Sohma eventually calls her out on, questioning her on if she loved her father too. In response to this Tohru could only fall silent, before hurriedly excusing herself. It was because of him that her mother had almost killed herself and left her. These events caused her to keep a tightly closed lid on certain aspects of herself, such as the feeling of abandonment she'd felt due to her father's death as a young child.

Although genuinely open and accepting, she never allows others to see the frightened Tohru that she disguises behind a smile. When her hidden feelings or past is even lightly touched upon, Tohru tends to shy away, change the subject, or find a way to make up for her odd behavior. Even the feelings she develops for Kyou are accompanied with a measure of guilt, believing that if she falls in love with someone else, then she is replacing the treasured memories she has of her mother. She feels filthy by what she perceives to be the 'fake' her that she presents the world. She fears that if anyone knew the real her, they would leave her. For this reason, the only person she truly opens up to completely, and very cautiously, is Kyou Sohma. When he remarks upon the subject of her father, she breaks down and finally admits for the first and only time to someone else that she's not anything like him. She confesses that her speech and mannerisms are all a lie. She admits later to herself that had Kyou not unconditionally accepted her weaknesses that she had exposed to him, she would have tightly closed her feelings back up into a small box and sealed them closed beneath a lid once more.

Ultimately, the hardest thing for Tohru is to let go and accept that all things change. It took the entire series for her to finally allow herself to realize that she can love someone else outside of her mother, and eventually let her go. The biggest test of this comes along when Kyou confesses to her that he let her mother die by his inaction. He tells her that before he ran away and as she was dying in the street she had whispered to him that she would never forgive him. Tohru tells him that there is absolutely no way her mother would have said such a thing. But that even if she had...she would have to be against her.

Despite her many weaknesses Tohru is an incredibly strong individual who, through her kindness and actions, is a lighthouse for several other characters in the series. She is supportive and sympathetic toward her friends, often at the expense of her own self. Momiji Sohma in the series compares her to a character he read in a book once, called the foolish traveler. Even while the foolish traveler loses everything, he's happy in the end because he was able to do so much for others. Yuki comes to realize that because of the love and acceptance she selflessly gave him time and time again, he looked for a mother inside of her.

Although she can be easily confused, is gullible, and often insecure, Tohru is strong, brave, loyal, determined, forgiving, self-motivated, thoughtful, and incredibly compassionate. She is the epitome of what a good friend truly should be and puts the well being of others high above her own.

[Specialties/Abilities] Beyond excellent cooking and cleaning skills, and being an amazing friend, Tohru’s your average teenage girl. She’s a hard worker, always does her best, and works herself to the bone.

[Affection] If someone hugged her Tohru would be fine, most likely. Kissing would probably cause her to become alarmed and freak out a little though, unless it was on the cheek.... and then it would depend on the person and how familiar she is with them. She might hug someone if she thinks they need it and it's appropriate, or hold their hand.

[Fighting] People are welcome to fight and injure her, but it would take a pretty mean person to want to hit Tohru. She wont instigate a fight and she wouldn't do so well in one either. As for killing, that's definitely something that would need plotted out.

[Other Permissions] I don't mind if a character reads Tohru's mind, but no breaking her brain with 4th wall. If someone recognizes her they're free to confuse her with it a bit, but ultimately don't spoil her with anything.
